Mindlance plans strategic expansion in India, to hire 600 by end-2010 news

US-based IT infrastructure services provider Mindlance has drawn up plans for expansion of its India operations. Under the plans Mindlance will look for strategic alliances with local partners to provide cost-effective solutions, according to a company official.

Kamal Sharma, Mindlance India chief information officer and business head told reporters, 'As we are looking for a pan-India presence and strategic alliances with OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and product firms, we will be hiring 600 people this year and 2,550 people next year to have a headcount of about 4,000 by 2011.'

Promoted by India-born Vikram Kalra, the New Jersey-headquartered firm is engaged in the management, optimisation and automation of IT operations for its clients worldwide across verticals.

'We have adapted a client engagement model, where vertical specific presales skills are deployed to analyse customers' business problems and help vendors achieve the right solution for their clients. Our enterprise level alliances and delivery capabilities serve Fortune 1,000 customers worldwide,' Sharma said.

The company, under a multi-year deal with Toyota Boshoku Automative India Ltd, will deploy its flagship solution to cut costs of IT operations by 50 per cent at the Japanese auto component maker's Indian subsidiary.

Sharma said Mindlance's solution was capable of handling the increasing SAP data in different environments and improve disaster recovery requirement for business continuity.

Capegemini wants to follow India'a model of hiring more freshers

For Capgemini, Europe’s biggest technology consulting company, India is emerging as an effective strategy for improving profitability. It will also help the company compete better with rivals IBM and Accenture, apart from Indian outsourcing companies such as TCS and Infosys. Paul Hermelin, the group CEO of Capgemini, who will turn 58 next month, plans to replicate Indian companies’ pyramid structure, which involves hiring fresh engineering graduates and achieving double-digit profit margins, higher than around 6-7% currently. In an exclusive interview with ET, Mr Hermelin says it may be a tad too early to celebrate the end of recession. Excerpts:
Banks seem to have started spending in the US and Europe on technology again, but some argue that everything may not be right. Are we celebrating too early?
You’re right, celebrating early would be the right word. First, the downturn was amplified by severe cost cutting by the main companies. We now see the 2009 profits and find that they are generally less bad than what people feared 12 months ago. It meant staff cut for protecting earnings, which amplified the recession. It’s just like automotive — they cut their inventory of cars, they stop the production just to exhaust their existing inventory. By doing that, they over reacted. Part of the better feeling after the fall was we have done that kind of ‘cost killing’ exercise, and we have come back to something that is more appropriate, but it is not necessarily to the level before the crisis — we have swallowed the over-reaction, that’s it.
If I take one sector that has apparently recovered — it’s the banks. There are far less housing programmes, less borrowing by households, so it’s not exactly the same world as before. So, if I look from our angle, we now see bigger projects. Last year, it was all about price reduction, vendor consolidation, now, they are back launching some new projects, but most of the projects have a mission, which is to reduce costs. I do not see banks launching new projects.
There is one point which has not been addressed, that is, the confidence of the end consumer. People are still fearful. Frankly, the level of saving in the US is better than it was — they did not save at all! They just consumed more than they earned. France has one of the highest savings in entire Europe. Savings would be directed to investments. If they save and do not consume, the money will be frozen. The US looks more optimistic. Americans are always optimistic, but only when they are completely depressed. They can’t stand pessimism for long.
Have you started to win new contracts?
On system integration projects last year, it was difficult to sign a project worth more than e10 million because projects were sliced in two pieces, people were delaying commitments on large projects. So, now, we have a good pipeline of projects between e20 million and e100 million, which is normal.
Many Indian IT firms are now looking at public sector offshoring as the next big opportunity. What lessons do you have to offer based on Capgemini’s long haul in UK’s government outsourcing market?
This sector is not too good for our Indian colleagues because there is a lot of protectionism. We are a big player there. First, we start to see some offshore presence and we can leverage them, too. With central governments, you couldn’t even talk about it, now you can. So there is an openness to consider what it would bring. When we run the tax authorities in the UK, they transfer to us 2,600 people.
Among them, some are still civil servants, with all the rights of civil servants — we can’t lay them off, it’s forbidden. So, if we offshore completely, we would be left with civil servants. It’s just not about offshoring, it’s about dealing with substitution. They want savings, but it’s quite difficult for them to manage the social consequences, so we have to find a way out and empathise with a customer’s problem. Will it change? Probably yes. Can it be as radical as in the commercial sector, may be not.

Accenture to hire 8000 employees in India by 2010

sighp_sz3_blk_nof_mac_accenture

Global consulting major Accenture is on a hiring spree in India. It says it will take on staff of about 8,000 by next year.

Global technology services and consulting major Accenture is bullish on India. In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Chairman & CEO, William Green said India is a crucial growth driver for the company. Speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in New Delhi, Green spoke about Accenture's hiring plans in India and the US recovery.

Excerpts from the exclusive interview:
Green: We have 180,000 employees around the world and 42,000 of those are here in India. We are on a hiring path to have 50,000 employees by the end of 2010 and we will keep going from there. Importantly, talent is a global commodity and people source talent where they can get it. We have had very good success here with getting terrific talent that we can train and do what we do; our clients are excited about it. And we will continue to leverage our presence here and our reputation in the market to bring on board more people.

Q: Will inorganic growth be a strategy that you could look at as far as India is concerned because there was a lot of buzz and talk that you were one of the contenders for Satyam which is now Mahindra Satyam? Would inorganic growth be a strategy for you?

A: It really isn’t here in India. And I think we have proven that we can grow a business. I remember when we had 400 people and in here and now we have 42,000 and we did all that one person at a time. One of the core competencies of our company is the ability to recruit and train and deploy talent. That is the thing we do.
I think we have been able to show that we can do that here. Once we have an engine in place that does that, I think we are in a very good shape going forward wherever we take the business in terms of products and services in the future.

Q: What about the US in specific, we are seeing visible signs of some sort of a recovery at this point and there is a question mark on whether this is sustainable or not, what is your thought on that?

A: The media and the stock markets are out ahead of business performance. There is no question about that. But if you really look at it there are a lot of encouraging signs. I think the US business has seen the bottom, we are seeing signs of stability, we are seeing some signs of forward momentum in certain industries, and we are going to see a slow but gradual recovery. When we cross into calendar 2010, I think we will see a little more momentum in the US economy across the board and very positive GDP growth that isn’t necessarily stimulated by the government.

Q: So you are not in the camp that expects another stimulus package?

A: I don’t think we should have another stimulus package. Right now in the US, only 40% of the stimulus money has actually made it out and some of that you are hard pressed to find. And I think we have got to just digest what we have and we’ve just got to have all our businesses focused on the fundamentals. As the US comes out of the crisis, many of these companies are going to be stronger and more focused and more determined than they have ever been before. And that is what is necessary to compete on the global stage.

SBI to hire 27,000 staff this year

India's largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI) plans to hire more than 27,000 people this year to fill its vacancies across different divisions, a top official said.

"This year (2010) we have plans to recruit 20,000-22,000 people in the clerical posts and 5,500 people at the probationary officer level," SBI Deputy Managing Director and Group Executive, Anup Banerji told reporters on the sidelines of Bancon conference here.

As part of its strategy of enhancing focus on rural operations, SBI plans to deploy 2,000 probationary officers in rural areas, Banerji said.

"We create a provision for appointing specialized probationary officers in the rural sector. Of the 5,500 POs, 2,000 of them will be recruited in rural sector and these officers will continue in rural marketing at least for next 10 years," he said.

Last year, State Bank had recruited around 25,000 people. The banking major also have plans to go for lateral recruitments in the middle-management level in the current year, Banerji said.

With a view to increase its presence into new centres, SBI plans to add another 1,000 branches this year, which will take the total number of branches to 13,000, Banerji said. Besides, State Bank also aims to scale up the number of ATMs to 25,000 by end-fiscal, he said.

Over the next few years, SBI expects to achieve a business growth of 25% annually, which will be 2-3 % above the industry, Banerji said, adding that if the growth picks up the growth is likely to reach 28 per cent over a period.

Indian Banks' Association Chairman and Union Bank CMD, M V Nair yesterday said that nearly 58 per cent of the employees in state-run banks will superannuate by 2012, which will create huge shortage of manpower in the industry.

"This year we will start lateral recruitment at middle management level, from manager to Assistant General Manager level, where ever it is necessary," Banerji said.

India has a shortage of 70,000 networking pros

While computers that process data and software that power them separately create hundreds of thousands of jobs worldwide, the networking technologies that link the two together are often missed in the buzz.

The world’s leading networking equipment company, Cisco Systems, estimates that India is facing a shortage of 70,000 professionals in networking alone, as data centres mushroom and the Internet expands to help businesses and homes alike.

California-based Cisco, which started out with routers and expanded into a range of switches and end-user gear such as conferencing systems, says an increasing trend to outsource IT infrastructure management will only widen the shortfall in the months to come.

Quality networking professionals are a rare species at the global level too. Globally, the shortage is as high as one million.

Cisco officials see an opportunity for boosting jobs in the networking space, which could be seen as an orphan falling halfway between hardware and software but critical to linking various systems.

“It is high time India trains more number of networking professionals to reap benefits,” Milind Gurjar, director of global market development and training delivery at Cisco, told Hindustan Times. Gurjar said young networking professional aspirants should consider specialised courses after acquiring experience for a couple of years to tap the emerging opportunity.

Apart from maintaining switches and routers, networking experts also take care of security and risk management in data centres and employ “virtualisation” under which a job done by a machine can now be executed through software, enabling easier network management from remote locations.

Gurjar added that in a survey conducted on CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) certified individuals says that these areas will be in hot demand over the next five years.

Network architecture, network design, unified communications and cloud computing would also be the trends over the next five years.

'Normalcy' returns to IT sector as attrition touches double digits

Job-hopping has resurfaced as a trend in the information technology (IT) industry after a year of freeze on promotions and recruitment due to recession. Attrition levels are touching double-digit figures across IT companies.

“There has been a definite rise in attrition across the industry in the past two-three months. With markets improving and the number of job offers going up in the new financial year, we are bound to see more movements,” TV Mohandas Pai, board member and director (human resources), Infosys, told DNA.

He, however, said the job-hopping this time was not accompanied by high salary gains. “The industry will not grow like it did previously and therefore, it is not really a boom time for salaries,” Pai said.

Mphasis CEO Ganesh Ayyar said attrition had gone up by 12% in the company in the past few months.

According to Teamlease, one of the largest staffing solution firms in the country, “a steady and drastic increase in attrition levels” has been seen since January-February.

“Attrition began mid last year. However, around December 2009,it went up by 20% from the previous quarter. In the past three months, companies have seen almost 25%-30% rise in attrition compared to last year,” the company’s general manager, Surabhi Mathur Gandhi, said.

She said till June last year, companies were reeling from recession. Now, however, the job market has opened up and employees are looking for pay hikes and job opportunities. “We expect attrition levels to go up even higher in the coming quarters,” Gandhi said, adding that current estimates indicated that by the end of 2010, attrition will be 30%-35% higher.

Ganesh Natarajan, vice-chairman and CEO of Zensar Technologies, said attrition had already risen from 2009’s 6%-7% to 10%-11%. “This is almost 50% higher than last year’s figures in corresponding quarters. In the coming months, all companies are likely to see people switch jobs and the numbers would be higher in large firms,” he said.

“There is almost a 30% increase in new replacement positions in companies, which shows that people are moving out in large numbers,” Gandhi said.

S Janakiraman, president and group CEO (product engineering services), MindTree Ltd, said every economic recovery sees a jump in attrition as people start looking for opportunities with better rewards.

“It [attrition rate hike] is a short-term spike that occurs after every slowdown and will vanish. We had seen a similar trend in 2001-02 when the market rebounded after a slump of two years,” he said.

Janakiraman estimated the industry attrition rate to have doubled to 13%-15% in the past two months. “It is cutting across verticals, but we are seeing a sharper climb in consumer appliances and engineering services. It is a correction,” he said.

E Balaji, CEO of Ma Foi Management Consultancy Ltd, also said rise in attrition was a normal phenomenon after a period of slowdown. “The downside of every recovery is increase in attrition and wage inflation. We have to see what the percentage of increase is and which industry and region are most affected?”

E Balaji said the all-India attrition rate was up 10% this month from 5%-6% last year. He said the rate was highest in Bangalore and concentrated in the IT-BPO sector, which was worst hit by recession. “In the IT-BPO sector, attrition is much higher at 15.16% compared to the industry average of 10%-12%.”

Experts in Mumbai said the rise in attrition was a result of market turnaround and internal restructuring. For instance, India’s second-largest IT firm Infosys Technologies saw attrition rise from 10.9% in Q2 (July-August-September) to 11.6% in Q3 that ended December 2009. Wipro also saw a sharp rise in attrition from 10.5% in Q2 to 13.4% in Q3.

Analysts said the turnaround in the economic scenario was throwing up job opportunities with better perks and remuneration. Besides, the restructuring exercise undertaken by some firms has caused resentment among employees, prompting them to look out. For example, about 2%-3% of the workforce at Infosys did not like the company’s recently launched role and career enhancement programme and the firm lost 4,000 employees in February alone.

However, IT industry insiders do not think attrition has increased greatly. “Attrition shot up in the November to January period, but has since returned to normal. As lateral hiring is experience-based, I believe there was a spurt in such hiring in that period. A dot doesn’t create a trend,” Jeya Kumar, CEO, Patni Computer Systems Ltd, said

Indians taking away American jobs is a myth

Urging the US to reform its visa policies, commerce minister Anand Sharma said on Sunday that the paranoia of the Americans about Indiantaking away their jobs, especially in the IT and services sectors, is a myth.
There is an incorrect perception in the US that Indians are taking away the jobs of Americans, which is driven more by the fast-paced growth India in the IT and services sectors, Sharma told newsmen.
Citing three recent reports, including one by PricewaterhouseCoopers and International Business Forum, Sharma said, "contrary to popular perception, Indian BPO companies have created income worth $106 billion inside the US in the past three years ending 2009, and generated 3,00,000 jobs out of which 2,50,000 were filled by Americans."
"These are jobs for Americans created in America but by Indian companies. This is a myth that jobs are being taken away by Indians," Sharma said.

Firms on a hiring mode in engg colleges

After hiring the "creamy layer" from premier engineering colleges, including MNIT, BITS-Pilani and government engineering colleges in the state, corporate biggies are now eyeing city-based private engineering colleges, indicating that recession' has possibly been replaced by recovery'.
The placement sessions in premier engineering colleges were over as they claimed to have got offers letters for 90% of the eligible candidates. Nizami, placement co-ordinator of MNIT, said, "We are almost done with placements. It has given space for the companies to explore opportunities in other institutes."
IT majors, including TCS, Infosys and Wipro, besides Bosch, are visiting private colleges to recruit students in varioust semesters in accordance with their upcoming projects. These institutes are delighted to see the IT biggies in their colleges.
In fact, TCS camped in the city's three private engineering colleges and conducted on-line test for hiring on Monday. Meenu Saxena, placement co-ordinator for Poornima Group of Colleges said, "A year ago it was quite difficult for us to invite the companies for hiring due to recession. Now the situation has changed as companies are flocking the campuses." Recently, Infosys recruited hundreds of students from private colleges with an average package of Rs 3.25 lakh.
The city has over 30 engineering colleges, most of them began only five years ago. Earlier, the placement process was a year-long event.
Saxena explained the reason behind the core companies' preferring Rajasthan's private colleges over other states. "It is the performance and the reputation earned by our students in the market. The performance of our students was outstanding as compared to other centres," said Saxena. Rohit Mishra, branch head of a consultancy firm said, "Generally the corporate bigwigs look for IITs and NITs but as the economy is recovering they are exploring opportunities in two-tier colleges as well."

Patni Computer Systems will hire 3,000 people this year, including 70% freshers

Patni Computer Systems, headquartered in Mumbai is the sixth largest software export company of India. This IT company is set to double its hiring target for the current fiscal year.

According to company sources, they will be hiring 3,000 people this year against a previously set target of 1,500.  It includes around 70% freshers and 30% expeienced professionals.

Careers at Patni Computer Systems offers huge growth opportunity. The company makes every effort to ensure career development opportunities that help employees to trace their own career paths. A vibrant, stimulating and open culture has made  people deliver their best performance at all times. Hence, empowerment is not a buzzword but represents a well-defined growth path.

The company also believes in encouraging employees to take up responsibilities at early stages of their evolving careers. This is possible through well-defined processes wherein employees are inspired to take up leadership roles. The company also regularly reward employees through attractive benefits and rewards.

Hiring likely to rise 15% in 2010-11: E&Y

India Inc is well and truly in recovery mode. Close on the heels of positive outlook on the job sector projected in surveys by the likes of Hewitt and Ma Foi, global consultancy Ernst & Young has said that there is likely to be a 10-15% increase in hiring in the 2010-11, led by the telecom sector which is projected to create jobs in excess of one lakh.
Indian job market seems to be striking the right chord with the country’s working population, as more and more vacancies are being created and filled across sectors. From a conservative point of view, percentage increase in hiring in the new fiscal can be between 10-15%, E&Y partner and national head (people & organisation) N S Rajan said.
The telecom growth story would continue in the fiscal and hiring activity in this sector is likely to be in excess of 1,00,000 jobs, he added.
Other sectors that are likely to step up hiring in the new fiscal include pharmaceuticals, FMCG and education, which are facing a talent crunch. Ernst & Young, however, said that due to the harsh lessons learnt from
the downturn, companies are going to approach hiring with a caution.

What is missing in IT graduates? Only 25% are employable

Recession is almost a thing of the past and there is a reason to smile as hirings are back. However, the IT sector continues to be plagued by the poor quality of software engineers churned out by colleges in the country. Most of those hired are still not industry-ready. While India produces close to 500,000 graduates from its engineering colleges every year, the industry is unanimous about their inadequate skill sets. According to a Nasscom estimate, only 25% of the engineers graduating are employable.

The software industry’s demands and the universities’ quality of academic supplies have not been tallying for a while. As universities fail to adequately prepare students for the professional world, most IT companies are forced to increase the duration of training and consequently annual expenditure.

Infosys chief financial officer V Balakrishnan is of the view that the current curriculum in colleges needs to be altered for producing better students. “The syllabus should be aligned to the needs of the industry. At Infosys, we having to train and retrain candidates, though we have a strict screening process during recruitment,” he adds.

Last year, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) increased its training period from three months to six months. Infosys, known for its lengthy and rigorous trainings, has been spending $175 million annually on training programmes. According to information provided by Infosys, the company expects this spend to increase marginally with the new training schedule in place. Currently, it spends $5,000 towards training of every employee it hires.

The country’s third largest software firm, Wipro, has an induction training of three months for fresh campus recruits. “We spend approximately 0.65% of our revenue and this percentage has remained constant over the years,” says Selvan D, senior vice-president, talent transformation.

IT sector is a people-based industry requiring niche skills. While it could be difficult for freshers to be equipped with all the skill sets, a little more than some basic knowledge is expected, say experts. “We would obviously need to equip our students with the relevant subject matter expertise and soft skills. However, certain basic knowledge is expected of the students. In our education system, neither the content nor the delivery is adequate. Education must be made relevant at the outset,” says Nasscom president Som Mittal.

Experts feel the talent available needs to be aligned to requirements of the industry to race ahead of competition in the global market

Nearly 28 million new jobs in manufacturing likely by 2015

With industrial output picking up, the manufacturing sector will be a major contributor to new employment and is likely to generate 27.95 million jobs by 2015, but the share of agriculture is expected to decline, according to a study.
In its study 'Emerging Future Jobs', the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has projected 87.37 million new jobs by 2015, with 32 percent share held by the manufacturing sector, followed by trade and construction.
And within manufacturing, textiles, food and beverages, transport equipment, metals, leather and machinery are expected to contribute the most to employment generation, it says. "The next most important source of new employment is expected to be trade with 24.24 million new jobs, followed by construction with a figure of 15.13 million," the chamber said. But agriculture, which accounts for a major share in total employment, is now likely to be minor contributor to new employment.
"Manufacturing will have the highest employment potential because after agriculture it accounts for the largest share of jobs at 12.5 percent among different divisions of economic activity. A faster growth of employment in it, therefore, would mean addition of a large number of jobs."
The chamber said a one percent growth in employment in the manufacturing sector would mean over 6.25 lakh (625,000) new jobs and suggested that if manufacturing was made to grow at 10 percent per annum, its employment potential will grow at over five percent.
"This would mean an addition of over three million new jobs every year."
The study also projected that though financial services has a small share of 3.4 percent in total employment at present, its contribution will almost double. New jobs will also accrue fast in IT and related sectors, growing to 3.28 million by 2015 from 1.62 million.

Cisco India hiring plans intact, to hire around 4,000 people

Network-equipment maker Cisco Systems on Friday said it remains committed to the Indian market and its plans to increase headcount to 10,000 is on track.
“With all the appropriate caveats, the global econnomy is turning. We are deeply committed (to India). We are completing construction on two additional areas, which can house as many as 3,000 more,” Cisco CEO John Chambers said at a private function here.
The headcount India is projected to rise to 10,000 from about 6,000 currently, he added. However, Chambers did not divulge the timeframe.
In 2007, the company had announced that it would increase its headcount in the country to 10,000 by 2010, from over 3,000 employees then.
“What we are focussing on is not labour arbitrage but partnering with the local and the national government and players like Tata, Reliance, Wipro and Infosys,” Chambers said. The company, which has a centre in Bangalore, is focussed on multiple verticals especially the government sector.
MoU SIGNED
Cisco signed a MoU with CSC e-Governance Services India to make education and health care solutions available and to promote social inclusion through common service centres (CSCs) across India. The education services will use the Cisco Remote Education Centre, an education platform hosted in the cloud with the ability to support 30,000 simultaneous classes

ENGINEERING COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE NOT INDUSTRY READY

A majority of students who graduate from technical institutions and engineering colleges are not “employable”, if a new survey by ‘Aspiring Minds’ is any indication.

Employability with regard to IT product companies is as low as 4.22 per cent (among computer/electronics related branches), while employability with regard to IT services companies is 17.84 per cent (wherein the company gives 3-6 months of in-house training) which is much lower than the “advertised” figure of 25 per cent, states the survey.

The survey was based on the results of a standardised computer-based test called Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test or AMCAT — conducted for more than 40,000 engineering and MCA students (in final year) in over 12 states.

To be at the forefront of innovation and achieve higher growth, the survey suggests that it is necessary that higher-order work with regard to product development and research grows in India apart from the services industry. To facilitate the same, the product engineering employability needs to be improved from the current figure of 4.22 per cent. This requires greater focus on part of institutions of higher education to impart quality education in Computer Science and Programming.

KPOs, suggests the survey, will find only 9.47 per cent technical graduates employable. Employability with regard to business process outsourcing units (BPOs) and Technical Support Jobs (TSJs) is 38.23 per cent and 25.88 per cent, respectively. This leaves a total of 61.77 per cent students who require training in both soft-skills and problem-solving skills to be eligible for any job in the IT or ITeS sector.

“We investigated how many candidates will be employable at IT services companies if they do not run 3-6 months in-house training and rather, put candidates directly on projects. This is a long term need of the industry and required for India to maintain its global edge in the IT services space. The figure can be optimistically estimated to 5.97 per cent. This is a concerning figure. For India to maintain its competitive advantage, the educational institutions need to produce industry-ready candidates. This requires substantial intervention on part of higher education institutions to impart IT skills to students,” states the survey.

It also notes that given that the ratio of the number of top 100 campuses to the rest is more than 10 times, more than 70 per cent (says it’s a conservative estimate) employable students in IT product sector are in so-called tier 2 campuses, whereas more than 80 per cent employable students for the IT services/KPO sector are in tier 2 campuses. IT product and KPO companies typically do not source from tier 2 campuses, which creates a large artificial dip in supply of eligible candidates, adds the survey.

At the same time, it is three times harder (in cost and effort) to identify an employable graduate from a tier 2 campus as compared to a tier 1 campus for a product company and twice as hard for IT services companies and KPOs. From an economic perspective, this makes it unattractive and inefficient for companies to hire students other than those from tier 1 campuses. This is the reason why companies use the campus name as a proxy to decide whether to give candidates an interview chance or not. Innovative models and government support is required to help bridge this huge gap hampering equal job opportunity and requisite manpower supply.

Job scenario in India improving, says survey

The job scenario in India seems to be improving, particularly in the export and IT/BPO sectors. The latest results from a quick employment survey conducted by the labour and employment ministry showed a marked improvement in the scenario during October-December 2009, with IT/BPO alone providing 4.87 lakh jobs.

The survey was conducted to study the effects of the economic slowdown on employment, mainly in eight sectors: Textiles, metals, leather, automobiles, gems and jewellery, transport, information technology/BPO and handloom/powerloom.

Overall employment improved by about 6.38 lakh (@1.70% per month) during December 2009, over September 2009, due to a substantial increase in employment in the IT/BPO sector alone. This sector hired 5.70 lakh people during October-December 2009.

The report said estimated employment in these sectors had experienced a net addition of 7.90 lakh since September 2008.

From October to December 2009, employment increased in all sectors studied, except for a marginal decline in transport. The increase in employment testified the growth in the industrial sector during the October-December 2009 quarter.

The survey findings showed that most of the employment gain in December 2009, as compared to September 2009, was registered in exporting units. Out of the total increase of 6.38 lakh jobs during this period, 5.80 lakh jobs (91%) were added in export units. In IT/BPO alone, 4.87 lakh jobs were added in export units during the period. Employment in export units of all other sectors covered (except transport) increased moderately or marginally during the period.
